Ms Azizova holds an LL.M. degree in human rights and international humanitarian law from Essex University. During her professional career she has held various positions at the Office of Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) working in the field of governance, justice sector and legal reform, policy advice and program management. Ms Azizova has worked on such important projects as the ratification by the Republic of Azerbaijan of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture and the subsequent establishment of and training staff of the National Preventive Mechanism, adoption of and support to the implementation of two national laws in the field of protection of the rights and freedoms of persons in detention and on the prevention and countering of domestic violence. She has long-term experience in training legal professionals working in the judicial circles (judges, prosecutors, members of the Bar, staff of the penitentiary institutions).
For the past nine years Ms Azizova has been working at the ICRC supporting the integration and promotion of international humanitarian law (IHL), inter alia working closely with parliaments, judicial circles and Ombuds offices, supporting specifically the work for the protection of rights of missing persons and their families, of persons with disabilities in the context of the armed conflicts and teaching IHL in academic circles. Ms Azizova has been a regular guest speaker at the law faculties of Baku State University, ADA University and Justice Academy in Azerbaijan, as well as at the University of Arizona in the US.
