The Legal Regime of the Arctic Maritime Areas: Institutional Mechanisms (in Russian)

The intensification of warming processes and the reduction of ice cover are creating new opportunities for shipping, exploitation of natural resources, and fisheries in the maritime areas of the Arctic. At the same time, environmental, social, and legal challenges are becoming more acute. This often leads to the conflict of interests of Arctic and non-Arctic States, as well as other actors, including international organizations and Indigenous peoples.

Against this background, the present research project is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the applicable international law in the maritime areas of the Arctic, including the existing international law norms, States’ approaches to regulating activities in the region, as well as the relevant practice of international institutional mechanisms.

This publication provides an overview of key universal and regional institutional mechanisms that influence the development, interpretation, and implementation of international law in the context of the Arctic maritime areas. It also seeks to identify the specific features of institutional interaction and assess the role of such mechanisms in the development of both universal and regional norms applicable within the maritime areas concerned.
