Agreement On the Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ)

The ICLRC prepared a review of the Agreement On the Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (in Russian), highlighting its history, main provisions, and implementation issues.

Many States and international organizations treat this Agreement as a historic one. It plays an important role in the sustainable development of ocean areas beyond national jurisdiction, as well as in combating existing challenges, such as biological diversity loss and degradation of the ecosystem of the ocean.

On September 20, 2023, after almost 20 years of work at the expert and interstate level, the Agreement was opened for signature by the parties at the UN Headquarters in New York and will remain open until September 20, 2025. By now, 82 States and the European Union have already signed it.
