The ICLRC launches the Biodiversity Legal Database

The International and Comparative Law Research Center (ICLRC) has launched the Biodiversity Legal Database, an online platform bringing together international legal instruments, international and national case law related to the conservation of biological diversity.

About the Project

The Database is designed for legal practitioners and researchers, representatives of government agencies and international organisations, and anyone interested in issues related to the conservation of biodiversity through legal means. Access to the Database is free of charge.

Developed in the context of the Triple Planetary Crisis—climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss—the project aims to facilitate the analysis and development of legal solutions in the field of nature conservation and sustainable development.

The interface of the Database is in English, and the materials are presented in their original languages.

Content

The Database contains:
  • international treaties and other legal instruments on biodiversity conservation
  • decisions of international courts and dispute settlement bodies
  • national court judgments relevant to the conservation of biodiversity
Each document is accompanied by a concise abstract and direct links to official publications. Moreover, the texts are available directly on the web page, making it easy to search for and copy the required information. They also include links to facilitate navigation through relevant materials within the Database.

The search engine allows to select documents using various filters depending on the type of material, including jurisdiction/parties, judicial bodies, topics, dates.

Further Development and Feedback

The Biodiversity Legal Database is a work in progress and is regularly updated with new materials. We are open to proposals for collaboration.

The ICLRC would also appreciate users’ comments and suggestions regarding the content and usability of the Database.

If you would like to contribute to the Database and/or assist in its distribution, or leave comments and suggestions on the functioning of the portal, please contact us at biodiversity@iclrc.org or via the feedback form.
